Kim Jong Un Gets Reaffirmed as Workers’ Party Chief at Party Congress
(MENAFN) Kim Jong Un has been reappointed as general secretary of North Korea’s ruling party during the ongoing party congress in Pyongyang, according to state media reports released Monday.
The decision was taken at the ninth Congress of the Workers' Party of Korea, which convened Thursday in the capital, Pyongyang. The event, held once every five years, has drawn approximately 5,000 party delegates.
According to coverage from the official Korean Central News Agency, the congress formally endorsed Kim’s continuation in the party’s top post. The agency quoted a resolution adopted Sunday stating:
"The Ninth Congress of the Workers' Party of Korea decides to elect Kim Jong Un as general secretary of the WPK in accordance with the unshakable will and unanimous desire of all the delegates, millions of party members, all the people and service personnel of the People's Army for the development of the WPK and the prosperity of the state,"
Addressing the gathering, party secretary Ri Il-hwan praised Kim’s leadership, declaring:
"Only Kim Jong Un can guide the trend of gigantic transformation of our cause put on an orbit of leap forward to a steady upturn without halt,"
He further asserted that the country has withstood international sanctions and emerged as a "formidable" power acknowledged by its adversaries.
During Sunday’s proceedings, delegates also selected full and alternate members of the party’s Central Committee. Among those confirmed as members were Kim Jong Un, Pak Thae Song, Jo Yong Won, and Ri Il Hwan.
Notably absent from the updated Central Committee list was Choe Ryong-hae, the 76-year-old parliamentary chairman and former top military figure. His exclusion, along with that of several other senior officials, is being interpreted as an indication of a broader generational transition within the country’s leadership structure.
