Lavrov Reaffirms Iran's Entitlement to Peaceful Nuclear Activities

(MENAFN) Requiring Iran to fully abandon its uranium enrichment rights — for any purpose — stands in direct contradiction to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov declared Wednesday, reaffirming Tehran's entitlement to peaceful nuclear activities.

Speaking in an interview, Lavrov said Moscow remains in close communication with Iranian authorities and harbors no doubt about Tehran's genuine commitment to resolving its nuclear dispute in a manner consistent with NPT obligations.

Lavrov also noted that Arab nations are actively signaling Washington to exercise restraint in its approach toward Iran, pressing for any future agreement to respect Iranian rights and ensure that the country's uranium enrichment program remains strictly peaceful in nature.

The remarks came a day after the second round of indirect nuclear negotiations between Iran and the United States wrapped up in Geneva on Tuesday. A fresh round of talks is expected to be scheduled in the coming period, as diplomatic efforts to reach a resolution continue.
