Hospitalized Palestinian Woman Gets Sent Back to ICE Custody
(MENAFN) Relatives and attorneys representing a 33-year-old Palestinian Muslim woman are pressing for explanations after US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) transferred her back to detention following a medical emergency that resulted in her being hospitalized for more than three days without communication with family members or legal counsel.
In a statement released Monday through her legal team, Hamzah Abushaban, Leqaa Kordia's cousin and designated spokesperson, said: "While we are relieved Leqaa is out of the hospital, we still have no idea what her medical condition is and what happened to her the past 3 days,” adding, “It has never been more urgent to call for her release.”
According to her attorneys, Kordia was taken to a hospital after suffering a seizure and was later discharged back into ICE custody. During the more than 72 hours she remained hospitalized, neither her relatives nor her lawyers were able to see her, speak with her, or obtain updates about her medical condition, the statement said.
Her mother described the experience as distressing, saying: "Not knowing what hospital she was in, or what condition she was in has been agonizing. Like any other family, we were worried sick,"
The statement further noted that after her legal team discovered her location through a journalist, one attorney immediately went to the hospital but was denied access, including the ability to communicate with her by phone. Her immigration lawyer was likewise refused contact despite multiple written attempts and an approaching deadline in her immigration case.
Representatives said Kordia has been held for nearly a year at the Prairieland Detention Facility in Texas. During her time in custody, she has reportedly experienced symptoms including dizziness, fainting, and other indications of inadequate nutrition, according to her attorneys.
Travis Fife, a staff attorney with the Texas Civil Rights Project, criticized ICE’s actions, stating the agency demonstrated "inhumane cruelty" by isolating Kordia from her family and legal representatives during what he described as an "extremely critical time, all while risking her health and safety."
