Giorgio Miescher is the Carl Schlettwein Foundation Senior Lecturer and Researcher at the Centre for African Studies in Basel. Since 2016, his core focus was on establishing Namibian and Southern African Studies at the University of Basel. Giorgio Miescher is also an associated researcher with the University of Namibia. In 2011, he was awarded the prestigious Marie Curie Fellowship for a project entitled Empires of the Visual and he entered an affiliation with the University of the Western Cape. Before joining the Centre for African Studies Giorgio Miescher was part of the scientific staff at the Basler Afrika Bibliographien, and in this function he taught courses in archive theory and visual history at the History Department of the University of Basel. His ongoing projects include Space in Time: Landscape narratives and land management changes in a Southern African cross-border region, a joint-research project with the University of Cape Town and the University of Namibia, and Learning for (Ex)Change, a joint-teaching project with the University of Namibia. He is currently completing a book manuscript on railway infrastructure and the constitution of the South African imperial realm in the subcontinent.
