The second edition of the Wheat Festival has officially opened at the Mleiha Wheat Farm, unveiling a refreshed concept that introduces a wider range of educational and entertainment activities, alongside discounts of up to 40 per cent on organic Ektifa products.

The festival was inaugurated last Thursday by Dr Eng Khalifa Musabeh Al Tunaiji, Chairman of the Department of Agriculture and Livestock and CEO of Sharjah Agricultural and Livestock Production Establishment (Ektifa).

Organised by the Department of Agriculture and Livestock, the event features live demonstrations, interactive workshops, competitions, and family-oriented activities, offering visitors a hands-on agricultural experience in a natural outdoor setting.

Vegetables straight from the farm

This year's edition places a strong focus on direct engagement with farming practices, allowing visitors to purchase fresh organic vegetables directly from the farm where the festival is being held.

The programme aims to reconnect the public with nature while promoting sustainable organic agriculture and locally grown produce.

The festival highlights the strategic importance of wheat cultivation as a key pillar of food security, while showcasing the role of farmers in strengthening the local food system. It also presents the latest organic farming technologies and practices that contribute to improving the quality and efficiency of local production.

Activities and contests

The organising committee also announced the launch of a 'Best Photograph' competition, inviting visitors to capture moments from the festival. The competition aims to support and nurture university students and photography enthusiasts from across the community.

The festival's pavilions and activities, which will continue until February 8, are open to visitors daily from 4pm to 10pm.

Supporting local businesses

The festival also opens new investment prospects for Emirati small and medium-sized enterprises, in line with Sharjah's vision for comprehensive and sustainable development. It serves as an integrated platform celebrating Sharjah's agricultural output, while supporting farmers and productive families by providing marketing opportunities for their products.

Revamped look

Dr Al Tunaiji said the festival's new look is distinguished by the diversity of its activities, which cater to all segments of society.“The festival offers visitors a new experience by allowing them to obtain fresh organic vegetables directly from the farm, reflecting our commitment to supporting sustainable organic agriculture and reconnecting people with nature,” he said.

He added that the event combines educational and recreational content, reflecting the richness and diversity of the UAE's agricultural and community identity.

He further noted that the festival provides an opportunity to explore Mleiha's scenic landscape, winter atmosphere and prominent landmarks, which have positioned the area as one of the UAE's leading tourist destinations.
