Next Round of Ukraine Peace Talks Scheduled for Abu Dhabi
(MENAFN) Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov announced on Monday that the forthcoming series of US-facilitated Russia-Ukraine peace negotiations is set to take place next week in Abu Dhabi, the capital of the UAE.
Addressing reporters in Moscow, Peskov noted that the precise date is still being determined, although US outlets have suggested that discussions might resume on Feb. 1.
"Planned for next week. I cannot name the exact date right now," he stated.
Reflecting on the initial discussions, Peskov warned that it would be premature to anticipate major breakthroughs from the early trilateral meetings due to the intricate nature of the topics under consideration.
He also emphasized that the issue of territory holds "fundamental importance" for Russia.
"It's no secret, this is our consistent position, the position of our president, that the territorial issue, which is part of the 'Anchorage Formula,' of course, has fundamental importance for the Russian side," Peskov said.
The official described the disputes over land as "a very complicated substance, challenging issues are on the agenda."
"But the mere fact that these contacts have begun constructively can be assessed positively. However, there is still very serious work ahead," he added.
Regarding Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy's rejection of withdrawing forces from Donbas, mentioned during his speech at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, Peskov urged caution when referring to "individual provisions."
"Currently, negotiations are proceeding at the expert level. Work is being done by a working group. Negotiations in this direct format are at an initial stage. It would be incorrect to discuss individual aspects of the issues on the agenda now, especially in a public format," Peskov said.
