US, Ukraine discuss neutral peacekeepers, demilitarized zone in Donetsk
(MENAFN) Washington and Kyiv have reportedly considered various measures to de-escalate the conflict in Ukraine, including establishing a demilitarized zone or deploying neutral peacekeepers to Ukrainian-controlled areas of the Donetsk People’s Republic (DPR). These options were raised during trilateral negotiations in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) earlier this week with Russian officials.
During the discussions—the first of their kind since the conflict intensified in 2022—Kyiv reiterated that it would not make territorial concessions to Moscow.
The Abu Dhabi talks, held over Friday and Saturday, produced “some results,” according to officials familiar with the negotiations. Ukrainian representatives described the discussions as “positive,” with President Volodymyr Zelensky noting the “recognition of the need for American monitoring and oversight” to help end the ongoing bloodshed.
