Protests erupt after federal agents kill man in Minneapolis
(MENAFN) Tensions have escalated across the United States following the fatal shooting of a 37-year-old man in Minneapolis, Minnesota, on Saturday. The incident marks the second time this month that a U.S. citizen has been killed by federal agents in the city, deepening public anger and unrest.
The death of Alex Jeffrey Pretti, an intensive care nurse, has further heightened emotions, leading to confrontations between demonstrators and law enforcement officers. The shooting occurred just weeks after a separate fatal incident on January 7 involving Renee Good, a 37-year-old mother who was shot three times by an immigration enforcement officer and later blamed by the Trump administration.
Federal authorities stated that Pretti moved toward officers while carrying a 9mm semi-automatic handgun and resisted attempts to disarm him. In an official statement, the agency said, "Fearing for his life and the lives and safety of fellow officers, an agent fired defensive shots," as stated by reports.
State and local officials pushed back strongly against that version of events, accusing federal authorities of rushing to shape the narrative, similar to what occurred after the earlier January shooting. Minneapolis’ police chief emphasized that Pretti legally owned a handgun and that state law permits individuals with a valid license to carry one.
According to reports citing video evidence, agents were seen spraying Pretti with a substance and forcing him to the ground before gunfire erupted. Additional footage reviewed after the incident appears to contradict the federal account.
As described by reports, “Footage shows Mr. Pretti was clearly holding a phone, not a gun, before the agents took him to the ground and shot him.”
Further analysis of the video indicated a delay between Pretti being restrained and agents realizing he was armed. According to reports, “About eight seconds after he is pinned, agents yell that he has a gun, indicating that they may not have known he was armed until he was on the ground.”
The incident has fueled renewed debate over the use of force by federal agents and intensified calls for accountability amid growing public outrage.
