US Border Patrol fatally shoots armed suspect in Minneapolis

(MENAFN) A man was fatally shot by a US federal law enforcement officer in Minneapolis on Saturday during a focused enforcement action, marking the second deadly shooting involving federal agents in the city this month, as stated by officials.

According to reports, the operation took place at around 9:05 a.m. local time (1505 GMT). Authorities said the individual, who was being sought in connection with "violent assault", moved toward officers while carrying a 9mm semi-automatic handgun.

Officials said officers tried to take control of the weapon, but the man "violently resisted," prompting a rapid escalation. "Fearing for his life and the lives and safety of fellow officers, an agent fired defensive shots," authorities said in a statement. Emergency medical assistance was provided immediately, but the individual was declared dead at the scene.

Further details released by officials indicated the man was also in possession of two ammunition magazines and was not carrying any form of identification at the time of the encounter.

Law enforcement leadership later described the deceased as a 37-year-old white man who lived in the area and was believed to be a US citizen. According to authorities, his known record consisted only of traffic-related offenses, and he was thought to be a legal firearm owner with a valid permit to carry.

Meanwhile, video footage circulating online appeared to show several federal agents attempting to restrain a person on the ground. In the video, some officers seemed to strike the individual while trying to subdue him, moments before a gunshot could be heard.
