US Imposes Sanctions on Iran's Shadow Fleet Over Killing of Protesters
(MENAFN) The United States imposed sanctions Friday targeting nine vessels and eight associated entities linked to Iran's clandestine maritime network, intensifying economic pressure over Tehran's lethal response to demonstrators, the Treasury Department announced.
The targeted vessels and their owners or operators—headquartered across India, Oman, and the UAE—have facilitated the transport of hundreds of millions of dollars in Iranian crude oil and petroleum commodities to international buyers, the Treasury disclosed in an official statement.
The Treasury highlighted Iran's "brutal crackdown on peaceful protesters and its complete shutdown of internet access to conceal its abuses against the Iranian people" as justification for the punitive measures.
"Today's sanctions target a critical component of how Iran generates the funds used to repress its own people," Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent declared, noting that petroleum export revenues have been redirected to finance Iran's security apparatus, weapons development, and regional militant proxies rather than essential services for Iranian citizens.
In a concurrent announcement, the State Department indicated this action will "further restrict Iran's ability to export petroleum and petroleum products through obscure and fraudulent mechanisms, and will further constrain its ability to bankroll the repression of Iranians and international malign behavior."
Iran has experienced successive protest waves since December 28, when demonstrations erupted at Tehran's Grand Bazaar over the Iranian rial's dramatic devaluation and deteriorating economic circumstances. Unrest subsequently expanded to multiple urban centers nationwide.
Iranian authorities have blamed the US and Israel for supporting what they characterize as "armed rioters" responsible for numerous attacks across public venues throughout the country.
US President Donald Trump has repeatedly vowed to "hit hard" should protesters face fatal violence, though he later praised Tehran for allegedly suspending hundreds of planned executions.
Media disclosed Tuesday that Trump is demanding "decisive" military strike options against Iran from advisers after retreating from earlier potential offensive actions.
