Gerard Dooly received the B.Eng. degree from the Department of Electronic and Computer Engineering, University of Limerick, in 2003, and the Ph.D. degree from the Optical Fibre Sensors Research Centre, University of Limerick, in 2008, where his doctoral research focused on optical fibre sensing for environmental emissions monitoring. He has over two decades of experience in field robotics, autonomous systems, and environmental perception. His research interests include drone-based remote sensing, machine vision, machine learning, SLAM, optical fibre sensors, and robotics for harsh and marine environments, with particular emphasis on offshore and coastal applications.
Prof. Dooly's current work focuses on the development of practical robotic systems for real-world environmental challenges, including beyond visual line of sight (BVLOS) UAV operations, coastal and marine monitoring, and technology to support community-led environmental action. He has led and contributed to numerous applied research projects and large-scale field demonstrations in Ireland and across Europe.
