UK PM Vows to Uphold Stance on Greenland

(MENAFN) British Prime Minister Keir Starmer on Wednesday vowed that the United Kingdom would uphold its stance on Greenland, insisting the country will not bend “under threats of tariffs.”

"I will not yield, Britain will not yield on our principles and values about the future of Greenland under threats of tariffs," Starmer declared during the weekly Prime Minister's Questions session in the House of Commons.

The remarks followed comments by US President Donald Trump last week, who announced plans to impose 10% tariffs on goods from eight European nations, including the UK, beginning Feb. 1, escalating to 25% in June, until Washington secures what he called "the complete and total purchase of Greenland."

Addressing Trump’s criticism on the UK’s Chagos Islands agreement, Starmer said the remarks were "for express purpose of putting pressure on me and Britain" in relation to Greenland.

The prime minister further distinguished Trump’s recent comments from prior interactions, noting that the president’s characterization of the Chagos deal as "an act of great stupidity" differed from his earlier "words of welcome and support."

In the same session, Starmer challenged the main opposition Conservative Party leader Kemi Badenoch, accusing her of "backing arguments intended to undermine Britain's position on Greenland" over her own comments regarding the Chagos Islands deal.

Last May, the UK finalized an agreement transferring sovereignty of the Chagos Islands to Mauritius, while ensuring continued operation of a strategically vital UK-US military base on Diego Garcia. The arrangement grants Mauritius control over the archipelago but allows the US and UK to operate the base for the next 99 years.
