Poland requires parliament approval for president to join Gaza Board
(MENAFN) Poland’s prime minister says any move by the country’s president to join US President Donald Trump’s proposed Gaza Board of Peace must first receive formal approval from both the government and parliament.
In a statement shared on a US-based social media platform on Monday, Prime Minister Donald Tusk writes, “Poland’s accession to an international organization requires the consent of the government and ratification by the Sejm,” referring to the lower chamber of parliament.
He adds that, “The government will be guided exclusively by the interests and security of the Polish state. And we will not let anyone play us.”
The comments follow confirmation by a senior presidential adviser that President Karol Nawrocki receives an invitation from Trump to take part in the initiative, according to reports.
Nawrocki, who aligns politically with Trump, and Tusk, a centrist leader, belong to opposing political camps and have been engaged in an ongoing struggle over who holds authority over Poland’s foreign policy direction.
Supporters of the prime minister argue that foreign affairs fall under the government’s mandate and accuse the president of exceeding his constitutional role.
Earlier this month, the White House announces the creation of the board, saying it will “play an essential role in fulfilling" Trump’s plan to bring a permanent end to Israel’s war on Gaza and oversee the reconstruction of the territory.
Reports say dozens of leaders worldwide receive invitations to join the Board of Peace, which Trump is set to chair.
