British man dies in French Alps avalanche
(MENAFN) A British skier in his 50s has been killed in an avalanche while skiing off-piste at La Plagne in the French Alps, the resort confirmed.
Rescue teams were dispatched immediately after being alerted at 13:57 local time on Sunday. The man was found buried beneath 2.5 meters (around 8 feet) of snow after a 50 minute search. He had been skiing without an avalanche transceiver or the guidance of a professional instructor, according to officials.
More than 50 rescuers—including medics, ski instructors, and a dog deployed by helicopter—took part in the operation. La Plagne expressed condolences to the man’s family.
The resort’s website advises backcountry skiers to consult the Avalanche Risk Bulletin and carry detection equipment before venturing off marked trails. Avalanches are most common between December and February in the northern hemisphere.
The tragedy follows another deadly incident last month in Italy’s Dolomites, where five German climbers—including a teenage girl and her father—were killed in an avalanche.
