U.S. Raid in Caracas Leaves Dozens Dead

(MENAFN) The U.S. government estimates that roughly 75 individuals lost their lives during a military operation aimed at seizing Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro in Caracas, according to a media outlet, which cited officials familiar with the matter.

One source suggested the toll ranged between 75 and 80, while another placed the minimum at 67. The figures include Venezuelan and Cuban security personnel as well as civilians caught in the clashes.

Earlier coverage by the media outlet reported that fatalities from Saturday’s U.S. mission had climbed to 80, citing a senior Venezuelan official, and warned the number could increase further.

On Jan. 3, American special forces apprehended Maduro in a nighttime raid in Caracas, taking him into U.S. custody amid coordinated airstrikes on military targets.

The operation, authorized by President Donald Trump, was linked to longstanding federal indictments accusing Maduro of narco-terrorism, drug trafficking, and corruption.

On Jan. 5, Maduro appeared in a New York City federal courtroom wearing handcuffs and an orange jumpsuit, where he entered a plea of not guilty to the charges.
