German Vice Chancellor Blasts U.S. Venezuela Attack

(MENAFN) Germany's second-highest official has sharply condemned Washington's military action against Venezuela that resulted in President Nicolas Maduro's detention, warning the operation raises serious concerns about international legal norms.

Vice Chancellor Lars Klingbeil delivered his rebuke Sunday, labeling the American intervention "very worrying," according to a news agency reporting.

While acknowledging Maduro presided over an authoritarian government sustained through brutality and suppression, Klingbeil insisted "this cannot justify disregarding international law."

He emphasized legal boundaries apply universally, stating: "International law must be respected. This also applies to the actions of the US."

Sharp Split Emerges Between German Leaders on Legal Assessment
Klingbeil's unequivocal legal critique contrasts starkly with Chancellor Friedrich Merz's more cautious initial response, which characterized the American strike's legal status as requiring nuanced evaluation.

"The legal assessment of the U.S. intervention is complex and requires careful consideration," Merz had stated Saturday on X, the US social media company. "International law remains the guiding framework."

The Vice Chancellor urged immediate priority be given to de-escalation efforts, advocating for "finding the path to a peaceful transition to democracy in Venezuela."

Venezuelan citizens must retain sovereignty over their political destiny, Klingbeil argued.

Trump Declares US Will Govern Venezuela During Transition
US President Donald Trump announced Washington will "run" Venezuela throughout an interim phase following Maduro and his wife's capture during a US military operation executed early Saturday.
