U.S. Venezuela Airstrikes Leave at Least Forty Dead
(MENAFN) At least 40 people perished in US airstrikes targeting Venezuela Saturday, with casualties spanning both civilian and military personnel, The New York Times reported, citing an unnamed senior Venezuelan government official.
The predawn assault unfolded as American forces executed a capture operation against Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and his wife. Both are now detained in New York.
The New York Times confirmed it authenticated video evidence displaying dense smoke plumes and successive detonations in the vicinity of La Carlota Airport in Venezuela's capital, Caracas.
In Catia La Mar, located west of the capital, a strike demolished a three-story residential building, obliterating its outer walls, the newspaper reported, noting at least one elderly woman was killed, and another person seriously injured.
Several US media organizations, referencing Venezuelan government sources, indicated that beyond Caracas, military installations in the Caribbean coastal states of Miranda, Aragua, and La Guaira sustained bombardment.
Venezuelan Vice President Delcy Rodriguez confirmed Saturday that both civilians and military personnel were among the casualties but did not provide specific figures.
US President Donald Trump told media in an interview on Saturday that during the operation to seize Maduro, some US personnel were injured, but no American troops were killed.
One US military aircraft was damaged, he added.
