UN Security Council to meet on Venezuela crisis

(MENAFN) The UN Security Council is set to hold an urgent meeting on Monday to address the recent U.S. military operation in Venezuela, the council’s presidency announced on Saturday.

Khadija Ahmed, spokesperson for Somalia’s Permanent Mission to the UN, said, "The presidency intends to hold the emergency meeting on Monday morning at 10 a.m. (1500 GMT)."

Somalia holds the rotating presidency of the Security Council for January.

The emergency session follows the U.S. operation on Saturday in Caracas, which resulted in the capture of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and his wife. The move has sparked international concern and condemnation, with calls for restraint and adherence to international law. The council is expected to discuss the implications of the operation on regional stability and the sovereignty of Venezuela.
