France Says Venezuela "Transition Must Be Peaceful, Democratic"

(MENAFN) Following the United States' detention of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro, France is calling for a transition of power that honors democratic principles and Venezuelan sovereignty, French President Emmanuel Macron declared Saturday.

Macron took to X, the American social media platform, to outline his position on the rapidly evolving crisis. He wrote that Maduro had been "trampling on fundamental freedoms" and accused the embattled leader of actions that "gravely undermined" the dignity of his own people.

"The upcoming transition must be peaceful, democratic, and respectful of the will of the Venezuelan people," Macron stated in his post.

The French head of state expressed confidence that Venezuela's population would welcome the change, asserting that the Venezuelan people can only rejoice after Maduro's capture by the US. Macron indicated his expectation that opposition figure Edmundo Gonzalez Urrutia would rapidly facilitate the power transfer.

"I am currently exchanging with our partners in the region. France is fully mobilized and vigilant, including to ensure the safety of its nationals during these uncertain times," Macron added.

Venezuela's administration had announced a national emergency hours earlier on Saturday, claiming Washington launched assaults on both civilian infrastructure and military sites across several Venezuelan states.

US President Donald Trump subsequently acknowledged what he characterized as a "large scale" military operation, confirming that President Maduro and his wife had been "captured and flown out of the country."

The military action follows an extended period of escalating American pressure against Maduro, whom Washington has implicated in international narcotics smuggling operations. Maduro has consistently rejected these allegations while indicating openness to diplomatic negotiations.
