Fidan to Visit Portugal for Talks on Bilateral Cooperation
(MENAFN) Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan is scheduled to make an official trip to Portugal on Monday.
According to information from the Turkish Foreign Ministry, Fidan will engage in both one-on-one and delegation-level discussions with his Portuguese counterpart, Paulo Rangel, focusing on advancing bilateral ties.
The agenda is expected to include strengthening consultations on regional matters, expanding trade and economic collaboration, boosting mutual investments, and launching joint initiatives in sectors such as energy, infrastructure, transportation, and port management.
Fidan will also emphasize the strategic importance of Türkiye’s participation in EU-led security and defense programs, projects, and industrial strategies, the ministry sources noted.
Diplomatic relations between Türkiye and Portugal were established in 1926, following Portugal’s adherence to provisions of the Treaty of Lausanne. To commemorate the centennial of these relations, joint events are planned for 2026.
Economic ties have grown steadily, with trade volume reaching $2.9 billion in 2024 and climbing to $3.1 billion in the first ten months of 2025.
Defense cooperation continues to deepen as well. On November 14, 2025, a steel-cutting ceremony was held in Istanbul for the first of two auxiliary replenishment and logistics vessels destined for Portugal, marking a significant milestone in long-term defense collaboration.
