Delcy Rodriguez gets named as acting president after Maduro’s arrest

(MENAFN) Venezuela’s highest court on Saturday directed Executive Vice President Delcy Rodriguez to “immediately” take over presidential duties following the detention of President Nicolas Maduro by US authorities and his transfer to New York.

As stated by reports, the Supreme Court instructed Rodriguez to assume leadership “in strict compliance with the Constitution and Venezuelan laws.” The decision was issued by the court’s Constitutional Chamber to guarantee the “administrative continuity of the state and the defense of the nation,” according to the chamber’s president.

The ruling said that Maduro is currently in a “material and temporary impossibility” to carry out his responsibilities as head of state.

On the same day, Venezuelan authorities accused the United States of carrying out attacks on both civilian and military facilities across several regions of the country and announced a nationwide state of emergency.

US President Donald Trump later confirmed what he described as a “large-scale” operation, stating that President Nicolas Maduro and his wife had been “captured and flown out of the country.”

The developments followed months of escalating pressure from Washington on Maduro, whom US officials accuse of involvement in drug trafficking. Maduro has repeatedly rejected the allegations and previously indicated his willingness to engage in dialogue.
