Germany Calls U.S. Action in Venezuela Legally “Complex”
(MENAFN) Germany’s Chancellor stated on Saturday that the legal evaluation of the American military operations in Venezuela will be "complex and requires careful consideration."
His comments followed the strikes that resulted in the detention of the South American nation’s leader, Nicolas Maduro.
Friedrich Merz emphasized that international legislation continues to serve as the principal framework. He reiterated on the U.S. social platform X that "The legal assessment of the U.S. intervention is complex and requires careful consideration."
These remarks came shortly after U.S. President Donald Trump declared that Washington will "run" Venezuela during a transitional phase following Maduro’s capture. Merz stressed, "At this stage, political instability in Venezuela must be avoided. The objective is an orderly transition to an elected government."
The German leader further accused Maduro of steering his country "into ruin," noting that the latest election was "rigged." He added that, similar to many other nations, Germany has refused to acknowledge Maduro’s presidency.
Earlier the same day, Soren Pellmann, a parliamentarian from the Left Party (Die Linke), urged Berlin to "clearly and unequivocally" denounce the U.S. strikes on Venezuela, describing them as a "clear violation" of international law.
He stated in a declaration shared on X that "The fact that, according to US reports, President Maduro was captured and taken out of the country is a further dangerous escalation and is absolutely incompatible with law and the international order."
