Canada Urges Respect for International Law
(MENAFN) On Saturday, Canada’s foreign minister emphasized the importance of adhering to international law in response to the recent U.S. military action in Venezuela, which resulted in the capture of President Nicolas Maduro and his wife.
Anita Anand noted that "Since 2019, when Canada closed its embassy in Venezuela, we have refused to recognize any legitimacy of the Maduro regime and opposed its repression of the Venezuelan people, including the persecution of dissenters and particularly political leaders opposed to the regime."
Highlighting Canada’s "commitment to upholding the rule of law and democracy," she stated that Ottawa "calls on all parties to respect international law, and we stand by the people of Venezuela and their desire to live in a peaceful and democratic society."
Anand added that "Canada is engaging with its international partners and monitoring developments closely," while also assuring that her country is prepared to assist Canadians in need through "consular officials and embassy in Bogota, Colombia."
Her remarks followed the U.S. "large-scale strike" on Venezuela, during which Maduro and his wife Cilia Flores were "captured and flown out" of the country. They were later transported toward New York City, where they are expected to face federal charges, according to U.S. President Donald Trump.
