Greek Premier Calls for Peaceful Transition in Venezuela
(MENAFN) On Saturday, Greece’s prime minister stated that now is not the appropriate moment to discuss the legality of the American actions in Venezuela, following U.S. strikes and the removal of the nation’s president and first lady.
Kyriakos Mitsotakis remarked that the "regime" of President Nicholas Maduro had inflicted “unimaginable sufferings” on the Venezuelan population. He continued: “The end of his regime offers new hope for the country. This is not the time to comment on the legality of the recent actions.”
Mitsotakis emphasized that the immediate priority should be securing “a peaceful and speedy transition to an inclusive new government that enjoys full democratic legitimacy.”
He further noted that Greece will work alongside its partners in the European Union and the UN Security Council to address the situation.
His comments followed the U.S. "large scale strike" on Venezuela, during which Maduro and his wife Cilia Flores were "captured and flown out" of the country. According to U.S. President Donald Trump, they were being transported to New York City, where they are expected to face trial.
