Swedes Cancel New Year Festivities for Gaza

(MENAFN) Hundreds of residents in Sweden chose to forgo New Year’s festivities on Wednesday evening, gathering instead in Stockholm to demonstrate solidarity with the people of Gaza.

Braving freezing weather, protesters convened at Segels Torg Square after being mobilized by several civil society groups. Rather than celebrating, they opted to mourn children and civilians killed by Israeli actions.

Participants carried placards with slogans such as “Children are being killed in Gaza,” “Schools and hospitals are being bombed,” “Comply with an immediate ceasefire,” and “End food shortages.” The demonstrators demanded an end to what they described as Israel’s genocide in Gaza and urged Sweden to stop selling arms to Israel.

In a collective statement, organizers declared: “In the new year, we reject the mass deaths, sieges in Palestine, and the silence toward these events. We refuse to begin a new year by turning a blind eye to injustice.”

The statement further stressed that Israel was failing to honor peace commitments with Palestine.

“As the world enters the new year, genocide continues in Palestine. Despite the ceasefire, Palestinians are being killed, the siege continues, and people are freezing to death while left without shelter in tents,” it read.

Carrying Palestinian flags and torches, the demonstrators later marched toward the Swedish Parliament.

Palestinian representatives have accused Israel of repeatedly breaching the ceasefire agreement, which ended a two-year war that has claimed more than 71,000 lives—mostly women and children—and left over 171,000 injured since October 2023.
