National Shield Forces Assume Full Control of Yemen’s Al-Mahra

(MENAFN) Pro-government units have secured authority over all districts in Yemen’s eastern Al-Mahra province following the retreat of Southern Transitional Council (STC) fighters, a local representative informed a news agency.

Mohammed Omar Suwailim, head of the Youth and Sports Office in Al-Mahra, stated on Saturday that the National Shield Forces expanded their presence across all nine districts of the province after the STC pullback.

He noted that the “handover process between the National Shield Forces and STC forces was carried out smoothly during a meeting attended by leaders from both sides in Qishn district (about 170 kilometers west of the provincial capital, Al-Ghaydah).”

On the same day, Yemen’s government announced that its National Shield Forces had also taken full command of Hadhramaut’s desert and valley areas after STC forces withdrew. State-run outlets reported that STC troops had vacated Al-Ghaydah airport and the presidential palace in Al-Mahra.

The National Shield Forces were established in 2023 by decree of Rashad al-Alimi, president of Yemen’s internationally recognized administration, and function under his leadership.

The STC, which campaigns for southern independence, offered no immediate response. The group had seized Al-Mahra roughly a month earlier.

Tensions in Yemen have sharply escalated since Tuesday, after STC forces captured Hadhramaut and Al-Mahra in early December. Together, these two provinces represent nearly half of Yemen’s landmass and share borders with Saudi Arabia.
