Mamdani Becomes New York City’s First Muslim Mayor

(MENAFN) Zohran Mamdani has officially taken office as New York City’s 110th mayor, becoming the first Muslim and African-born individual of Indian heritage to assume the role.

At 34 years old, he delivered his midnight oath on a centuries-old Quran inside a long-shuttered subway station beneath City Hall on Thursday.

Later that day, during a public inauguration outside City Hall, Mamdani strongly emphasized his democratic socialist beliefs, promising to “govern expansively and audaciously.”

“My fellow New Yorkers – today begins a new era!” he proclaimed in a nearly 25-minute speech before an audience of about 4,000 people.

“I was elected as a Democratic socialist and I will govern as a Democratic socialist,” he stated. “I will not abandon my principles for fear of being deemed radical.”

Once a relatively unknown state legislator, Mamdani pledged to deliver universal childcare, freeze rental costs, provide free bus transportation, and impose taxes on the city’s wealthiest residents to finance his program.

He firmly rejected the sway of wealth and privilege in city politics, vowing to serve the public rather than “any billionaire or oligarch who thinks they can buy our democracy.”
