Lukashenko Claims He Warned Putin of Assassination Plot
(MENAFN) Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko revealed that he cautioned Russian President Vladimir Putin about a potential assassination attempt ahead of a planned visit to South Africa for the BRICS summit in 2023. His comments came in the wake of a recent Ukrainian drone strike on Putin’s residence in the Novgorod Region.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov reported that Ukraine had launched 91 long-range drones at the compound during the night of December 28–29, though none caused damage. Kiev has denied responsibility for the attack.
Russia’s Defense Ministry later released a map and video footage of UAV wreckage, describing the attempted strike as “targeted” and “carefully planned.”
Speaking to reporters on Wednesday, Lukashenko recalled a private conversation with Putin before the BRICS summit. He explained that Belarusian intelligence had intercepted informal signals from Western sources “at the level of conversations and rumors,” indicating preparations for a terrorist plot against the Russian leader.
Lukashenko characterized the exchange as a warm, brotherly discussion, during which he urged Putin not to travel abroad while the conflict in Ukraine persisted.
According to Lukashenko, Putin initially dismissed the warnings, remarking that his adversaries were “not that crazy anymore, not that extreme.” The Belarusian leader said he pressed further, insisting that the trip was unnecessary.
