Putin, Syrian officials hold talks in Moscow

(MENAFN) Russian President Vladimir Putin met on Tuesday in Moscow with Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaibani and Defense Minister Murhaf Abu Qasra to discuss key political, military, and economic matters, according to official reports.

The discussions focused on enhancing strategic cooperation in the military and defense industry, while also exploring ways to expand economic and trade ties. Talks included supporting reconstruction projects, developing infrastructure sectors, encouraging investments in Syria, boosting trade, and facilitating partnerships—all aimed at strengthening Syria’s economy and improving living conditions.

Putin reaffirmed Russia’s steadfast support for Syria, emphasizing the importance of maintaining “Syria’s territorial integrity and full sovereignty” and rejecting efforts to divide the country or undermine its independent decision-making. He also reiterated Moscow’s stance against Israel’s repeated violations of Syrian territory, describing them as a “direct threat to regional stability and security.”

The meeting follows Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa’s visit to Moscow in mid-October, his first since the ousting of former President Bashar al-Assad in late 2024. Assad, who had led Syria for nearly 25 years, fled to Russia on Dec. 8, 2024, ending the long-standing Baath Party regime. Sharaa, who led the anti-regime forces, was declared president for a transitional period in late January.
