Azerbaijani President to Skip Informal CIS Summit

(MENAFN) Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev will not attend an informal summit of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) scheduled for Monday in Russia, according to state media reports.

Azerbaijan’s presidential administration told a state news agency that Aliyev will be unable to take part in the meeting in St. Petersburg due to a heavy work schedule.

The administration also pointed out that Aliyev was absent from a gathering of Eurasian Economic Union leaders held in the same city a day earlier, noting that Azerbaijan is not a member of the bloc, which was formed in 2015.

Despite the absence, officials stressed that Azerbaijan regularly participates in official CIS summits and places significant importance on cooperation within the regional intergovernmental organization.

On Sunday, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told a Russian state news agency that Russian President Vladimir Putin is expected to hold separate meetings with Aliyev and Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan on the sidelines of the event.

The CIS was created in 1991 after the collapse of the Soviet Union to foster cooperation in economic, political, and security matters.

Current full members of the CIS are Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Moldova, Russia, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan. Turkmenistan holds associate member status, while Moldova suspended its participation in CIS meetings in 2022.
