Doha, Qatar: Diabetes Qatar, in partnership with the official sponsor Ooredoo, has launched the 26th edition of Al-Bawasil Camp, which it organises annually for children diagnosed with diabetes aged 7 to 11. The camp brings together 72 children from 11 countries, in addition to participants from the State of Qatar, as part of its ongoing efforts to support and empower children living with diabetes and enhance their self-management skills.

Al-Bawasil Camp is considered the largest camp of its kind in the region, running for a duration of six days, and is hosted this year by Aspire Academy for Sports Excellence, which provides an integrated environment supporting the camp's educational and recreational objectives.

The camp officially commenced with an opening ceremony held at Aspire Academy, while the formal opening event took place at the Student Centre of Qatar Foundation. The ceremony began with a welcome speech by Dr. Abdullah Al-Hamaq, Executive Director of Qatar Diabetes and General Supervisor of the camp, who welcomed the children, their families, and the participating delegations.

Commenting on the occasion, Executive Director of Diabetes Qatar, Dr. Abdullah Al-Hamaq said,“Al-Bawasil Camp represents an important annual milestone in our mission to empower children living with diabetes. Through this camp, we aim to equip them with knowledge and practical skills that enhance their independence and confidence in managing the condition. We also believe in the importance of providing a safe and supportive environment that combines education with entertainment and fosters positive connections among children from different countries, encouraging them to adopt a healthy and balanced lifestyle.”

Dr. Al-Hamaq added,“It is worth noting that Diabetes Qatar launched the first Al-Bawasil Camp in 1999, initially dedicated exclusively to children within the State of Qatar. In 2009, participation was expanded to include GCC countries, and in 2013, the camp welcomed its first international delegation. Subsequently, the International Diabetes Federation recognised Al-Bawasil Camp as a global camp capable of hosting children from around the world.”

The opening ceremony featured a motivational video conveying a message of hope, emphasising that living with diabetes does not stand as a barrier to children's dreams or future aspirations. The video highlighted the ability of children living with diabetes to overcome challenges and succeed, as well as the supportive role of Al-Bawasil Camp in empowering them psychologically and strengthening their self-confidence.

The ceremony also included a variety of entertainment segments and a theatrical performance in an interactive atmosphere, with the participation of beloved cartoon characters that brought joy and excitement to the opening celebrations.

Al-Bawasil Camp provides a safe, educational, and enjoyable environment for children with diabetes from across the Middle East and North Africa.
