Man Sentenced To 21 Years After Driving Into Liverpool Fans

(MENAFN- Khaama Press) A man has been sentenced to 21 years in prison after deliberately driving into a crowd of Liverpool football fans, injuring 134 people.

Paul Doyle, 54, was sentenced to 21 years in prison on Tuesday for driving a car into a crowd of Liverpool football fans during the Premier League title celebrations in June. The attack injured more than 130 people, including eight children, and Doyle had previously admitted 31 criminal charges last month.

The incident occurred on June 26, 2025, near Liverpool Football Club, when roughly one million fans had gathered to celebrate the team's league title. What was meant to be a joyous celebration turned into chaos and fear for hundreds of spectators.

Prosecutors said Doyle acted in a state of extreme anger, deliberately injuring dozens of people. The court highlighted the seriousness of the attack and the significant risk it posed to public safety, which contributed to the heavy prison sentence.

Reuters reported that Doyle has a long history of violent behavior. He briefly served in the British Navy in the early 1990s but was discharged for violent conduct, raising concerns over his temperament long before the Liverpool incident.

A former soldier, Daniel Barr, intervened during the attack, stopping Doyle's car and preventing further injuries. The judge praised Barr's bravery, noting that his quick actions likely saved lives and prevented even more serious harm.

Doyle's lawyer told the court that his client felt remorse, shame, and regret for his actions. However, the judge emphasized that Doyle's apology did not reduce the severity of his crimes or the necessity for a lengthy prison term.

The sentencing marks a sobering reminder of how a moment of uncontrolled anger can transform a public celebration into tragedy, leaving lasting impacts on victims, families, and the community.
