Boat Sinking Claims Lives of 14 Egyptians

(MENAFN) At least 14 Egyptian nationals perished after an irregular migration vessel capsized close to the port of the Greek island of Crete, the Foreign Ministry reported on Tuesday.

In an official statement, the ministry said it is closely monitoring the incident involving the irregular migration boat, which departed from a neighboring country of Egypt en route to Greece on Dec. 7, 2025.

The vessel was transporting 34 irregular migrants from various nationalities, among whom 14 Egyptians lost their lives, the ministry confirmed.

The ministry emphasized that it is in prompt contact with Greek authorities to offer all possible support to those rescued and to facilitate the repatriation of the bodies of the Egyptian victims.

Characterizing the tragedy as “tragic,” the ministry urged Egyptian citizens “not to be drawn into the clutches of irregular migration networks,” highlighting the importance of safeguarding lives and preventing the recurrence of such distressing events.

Irregular migrants frequently use Libya and other neighboring countries as transit points to reach Crete, a strategic entry to the European Union.

Earlier in July, the Greek government opted to halt asylum applications, especially for individuals arriving in Crete from Libya.
