Another Israeli soldier dies by suicide amid Gaza war

(MENAFN) An Israeli soldier has taken his own life at a military base in northern Israel, bringing the number of suicides linked to the ongoing Gaza war to 61, according to local reports.

The soldier, serving compulsory military duty, sustained critical injuries after shooting himself inside the base and was pronounced dead Tuesday evening in a hospital, Israeli newspaper reported. The military confirmed that a soldier was seriously injured in a shooting at a northern base and later died, noting that military police have opened an investigation.

Since the start of the Gaza war in October 2023, 48 soldiers have committed suicide while on duty.

At least 13 others have died by suicide outside military service due to psychological issues, including six since the start of 2025. This raises the total number of suicides associated with the war to 61.

Data from the Knesset Research and Information Center shows that between early 2024 and July 2025, 279 Israeli soldiers attempted suicide, roughly equating to one completed suicide for every seven attempts. In 2024 alone, 20 soldiers died by suicide, with at least 16 more deaths occurring through July 2025, followed by at least four additional cases since then.

In October, Israeli Chief of Staff Eyal Zamir acknowledged a worsening mental health crisis within the army, stating that thousands of soldiers were receiving psychological care. He urged commanders to detect mental health issues early and ensure soldiers receive prompt treatment.

Nearly 10,000 Israeli soldiers injured in Gaza are reported to suffer from psychological disorders, including post-traumatic stress disorder, and are being treated at the Defense Ministry’s Rehabilitation Department, according to a report from July.

The suicide surge comes amid a devastating conflict in Gaza, where nearly 70,700 Palestinians, mostly women and children, have been killed and more than 171,000 injured since October 2023, with much of the enclave reduced to rubble.
