Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant relies on single power line following fire

(MENAFN) The Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant (ZNPP) is currently receiving electricity through a single external power line after a fire damaged infrastructure connecting the plant to a nearby thermal power facility, according to a statement on the plant’s Telegram channel.

The fire affected a communication line between the thermal plant’s outdoor switchgear and the nuclear facility, resulting in the loss of power from the Ferrosplavnaya-1 transmission line. As a result, external electricity is now being supplied via the Dneprovskaya power line.

Plant officials confirmed that the facility continues to receive external power, while specialists assess the extent and exact location of the damage. Repairs and restoration work will begin when conditions permit.

The statement emphasized that the situation is “under complete control,” noting that radiation levels remain normal and within natural background ranges, and that reactor safety limits and operating conditions have not been compromised.

Europe’s largest nuclear facility, Zaporizhzhia NPP, has faced repeated disruptions to its external power supply since the onset of the Russia-Ukraine war. Ukrainian authorities and international organizations have repeatedly warned that dependence on limited power lines increases safety risks, as stable external electricity is critical for cooling systems and overall nuclear safety.
