BBC to Challenge Lawsuit from Trump

(MENAFN) On Tuesday, BBC announced it intends to contest a $10 billion legal action brought by US President Donald Trump, who accuses the broadcaster of altering footage of his Jan. 6, 2021, address in a Panorama documentary.

According to court filings submitted Monday in the US state of Florida, Trump is demanding $5 billion in compensation for each of two allegations. The lawsuit claims the public broadcaster engaged in defamation and breached a trade practices statute.

"As we have made clear previously, we will be defending this case," a BBC spokesperson said in a statement. "We are not going to make further comment on ongoing legal proceedings."

The dispute emerged after The Telegraph released a leaked internal BBC memorandum in November. The document indicated that the Panorama episode, aired one week ahead of the 2024 presidential election, combined two separate excerpts of Trump’s speech in a way that made it seem as though he directly urged the January 2021 Capitol Hill unrest.

In the original address, Trump stated, "We're going to walk down to the Capitol, and we're going to cheer on our brave senators and congressmen and women."

However, in the edited version shown in the BBC documentary, Trump appeared to say: "We're going to walk down to the Capitol, and I'll be there with you. And we fight. We fight like hell."

The BBC later acknowledged that the two segments of the speech that were merged in the program had originally been delivered more than 50 minutes apart.
