Migration Boat Overturn Claims Lives of Fourteen Egyptians
(MENAFN) At least 14 Egyptian nationals perished when a smuggling vessel capsized near Crete's coastline, the Foreign Ministry disclosed Tuesday, marking another deadly chapter in the Mediterranean migration crisis.
In a statement, the ministry said it is following up on the sinking of an irregular migration boat that departed from one of Egypt's neighboring countries heading to Greece on Dec. 7, 2025.
The doomed vessel was transporting 34 irregular migrants representing multiple nationalities, with 14 Egyptian citizens losing their lives in the maritime tragedy, ministry officials confirmed.
Cairo Coordinates Rescue Response, Repatriation Efforts
The ministry said it communicates swiftly with Greek authorities to provide all possible assistance to those rescued from the boat, and to expedite the repatriation of the bodies of the Egyptian victims.
Characterizing the disaster as "tragic," the ministry called on Egyptian citizens "not to be drawn into the clutches of irregular migration networks," urging nationals to protect their lives and prevent similar catastrophic events from recurring.
Crete Emerges as Critical EU Entry Point Amid Policy Shifts
Irregular migrants have increasingly utilized Libya and surrounding nations as launching points to reach Crete, which serves as a strategic gateway into the European Union.
Early July witnessed the Greek government implementing a freeze on asylum processing, specifically targeting arrivals to Crete from Libya.
Egypt maintains it has successfully blocked all irregular migration vessel departures bound for Europe since 2016. However, Egyptian migrants frequently exploit Libya as an alternative transit corridor to circumvent domestic enforcement measures.
