SAN JOSE, CA - Microsoft veteran Steve Clayton is joining Cisco as its new chief communications officer,, as the company looks to sharpen its narrative around AI, infrastructure and trust at what CEO Chuck Robbins described as a“pivotal moment” in its history.
“We are at a pivotal moment in our company's history, as we look to help customers, partners, and governments around the world unlock the power of AI,” Robbins said in a blog post announcing the appointment. He added that Clayton's“deep expertise and vision will help us further elevate Cisco's story and cement our role as providers of the critical infrastructure for the AI era.”
Clayton joins Cisco on January 5 after spending more than 28 years at Microsoft, most recently as VP of communications strategy and chief storyteller. In that role, he worked closely with senior leadership to shape the company's communications and played a central role in evolving Microsoft's owned storytelling and its application of AI across the global communications function.
Earlier in his career at Microsoft, Clayton also led the company's global public affairs team. His tenure spanned Microsoft's cultural and strategic reinvention under CEO Satya Nadella.
He succeeds Maria Poveromo, who left the company earlier this year after six years,
In a LinkedIn post announcing his departure, Clayton said that after 28 years at Microsoft,“it feels surreal to write this: I'm starting a new chapter.” He described his time at the company as a“front-row seat to Microsoft's reinvention,” adding that the culture shift under Nadella“changed not only what Microsoft delivered to the world, but how it showed up in the world.” Clayton also thanked Microsoft CCO Frank X. Shaw, writing,“I've learned more from Frank than I can put into words,” and called the move to Cisco“a full-circle moment.” He pointed to Cisco's foundational role in the rise of the internet and said that, in the AI era,“infrastructure, security, and trust aren't background details; they're essential ingredients of what comes next.”
