South Korea’s Special Counsel Details Yoon’s Martial Law Bid
(MENAFN) South Korea’s special prosecutor announced on Monday that former President Yoon Suk Yeol had started laying the groundwork for his Dec. 3, 2024 martial law order as far back as October 2023, meaning the effort began roughly 14 months in advance.
According to the special counsel, Yoon had weighed the option of enforcing martial law ever since assuming office in 2022 and spent over a year preparing before issuing the nation’s first such decree in nearly four decades. These findings were presented at a Monday press briefing marking the end of a 180-day investigation, as reported by a media outlet.
"We have confirmed Yoon, Kim, and (former Counterintelligence Commander) Yeo In-hyung conducted abnormal military operations in October 2024 to induce military actions from the North to acquire justification for the emergency martial law," said Special Counsel Cho Eun-suk, claiming they planned to use a threat from North Korea to justify imposing martial law.
The investigative team revealed that it has brought indictments against 27 people in connection with the failed attempt to enforce martial law, among them several former Cabinet officials from Yoon’s administration.
Yoon had already faced charges for orchestrating an insurrection and abusing his authority. After the special counsel was formed, prosecutors added further accusations, including obstruction of justice, providing assistance to an enemy, and committing perjury.
"The investigation confirmed that (Yoon) made the declaration for the purpose of suspending political and National Assembly activities through military force, seizing control of legislative and judicial powers through an emergency legislative body, then eliminate those opposing him to monopolize and maintain power," Cho told reporters.
