Hollywood Director Rob Reiner, His Wife Found Dead in LA Home

(MENAFN) Hollywood is reeling after acclaimed director Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele Reiner, were discovered dead inside their Brentwood, California residence, prompting a homicide investigation by the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD).

Police said officers responded to a medical emergency call on Sunday and found the bodies of the 78-year-old filmmaker and his 68-year-old wife inside a home they owned. According to reports from media and People, the couple suffered injuries consistent with a knife attack.

The LAPD confirmed that the deaths are being treated as an apparent homicide. Speaking Sunday evening, chief detective Alan Hamilton said investigators were continuing to gather evidence but emphasized there was no immediate threat to the public. He noted that “no one has been detained” and that “no one is being questioned as a suspect.”

Despite the official stance, speculation has emerged around the couple’s son, Nick Reiner. People magazine reported that he may be involved, although police have not confirmed whether he is formally considered a suspect. Subsequent reports indicate he is being questioned by authorities, but investigators have stopped short of assigning him any official status in the case.

In a 2016 interview with People, Nick, now 32, spoke openly about battling drug addiction from an early age and experiencing periods of homelessness. Those struggles later influenced the semi-autobiographical film Being Charlie, which he co-wrote.

Rob Reiner enjoyed a Hollywood career spanning more than five decades. He first rose to prominence portraying Michael “Meathead” Stivic on ‘All in the Family’ (1971–1979) before becoming a celebrated director. His films included ‘This Is Spinal Tap’, ‘The Princess Bride’, and ‘When Harry Met Sally’. He later transitioned into dramatic storytelling with ‘Stand by Me’ in 1986 and earned an Academy Award nomination for “A Few Good Men” (1993), starring Jack Nicholson and Tom Cruise.

Beyond entertainment, Reiner was a prominent political activist. He was an outspoken critic of U.S. President Donald Trump and co-founded the American Foundation for Equal Rights, which spearheaded the legal challenge that overturned California’s ban on same-sex marriage. He also led national anti-smoking initiatives and briefly considered running against former California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger in 2006 before withdrawing for personal reasons.

The investigation remains ongoing as authorities work to determine the circumstances surrounding the deaths.
