Look: Design Revealed For Dubai's Palm Jebel Ali Friday Mosque

Developer Nakheel has unveiled the design of the Palm Jebel Ali Friday Mosque, a new landmark that will serve as the“spiritual and cultural heart” of the island development.

Designed to accommodate up to 1,000 worshippers, the mosque is positioned along the island's central spine.

It has been designed by architecture firm Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM). The mosque's minaret will rise 40 metres and will be a prominent feature across the Palm. Its geometric form reflects design elements commonly found in Islamic architecture.

According to the developer, the design draws on traditional Islamic architectural elements while adopting a contemporary form. A textile-inspired canopy extends from the roof into the courtyard, providing shade and connecting the structure visually to its surroundings.

The layout includes landscaped walkways, defined circulation routes and dedicated ablution areas. Natural light is filtered into the prayer spaces to create subdued interior lighting.“Natural light is softly diffused throughout, creating tranquil interiors that elevate the spiritual experience while offering comfort and serenity," Nakheel said.

Khalid Al Malik, Chief Executive Officer of Dubai Holding Real Estate, said the mosque is intended to function both as an architectural icon and as a place of worship and peace for residents and visitors to the island.

Chris Cooper, Partner at SOM, said the design reinterprets Emirati vernacular architecture for a new generation. He noted that the mosque draws inspiration from Palm Jebel Ali's coastal setting, using geometry, light and material to create a serene sanctuary that is rooted in tradition while looking to the future.

Palm Jebel Ali spans seven islands across 13.4km and includes 16 fronds with more than 90km of beachfront.
