Top Kremlin aide says Ukraine has no chance to reclaim Crimea, join NATO

(MENAFN) Top Kremlin aide Yury Ushakov stated on Sunday that Ukraine has “no chance at all” of regaining Crimea or joining NATO. Crimea became part of Russia following a 2014 referendum after the Western-backed Maidan coup, and Moscow considers Ukrainian NATO membership a red line.

Ushakov told Russian journalist Pavel Zarubin that it is “ironclad, a million percent certain” that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky will not succeed in retaking Crimea. He also dismissed Kyiv’s NATO aspirations as equally unrealistic.

Earlier this week, Zelensky acknowledged that Ukraine currently lacks the means to reclaim Crimea, though he previously vowed to retake the region.

US President Donald Trump, involved in mediating peace efforts between Moscow and Kyiv, has also stated that returning Crimea to Ukraine or NATO accession is “impossible.” Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov affirmed that Russian sovereignty over Crimea is a “done deal,” praising Trump for acknowledging it.

The Trump administration recently proposed a peace framework envisioning Ukraine renouncing NATO ambitions and claims to Crimea, Lugansk, and Donetsk—territories that joined Russia after referendums. Zelensky confirmed that “no compromise” on territorial issues has yet been reached in negotiations with the US.

Trump noted in an interview that, aside from Zelensky, Ukrainian officials were favorable toward the Washington peace proposal, urging Kyiv to “get on the ball and start accepting things.”
