FBI sacks reinstated whistleblower over media-related misconduct
(MENAFN) The FBI has fired Steve Friend, a former agent and COVID-era whistleblower who had recently been reinstated, citing “unprofessional conduct and poor judgment” related to his interactions with the media.
According to a termination letter shared publicly, the bureau said Friend “participated in unauthorized interactions with the media, publicly disseminated media sources, and commented publicly on FBI matters and ongoing FBI investigations.” The letter also noted that in November, he allegedly discussed and identified a subject on his podcast “despite the lack of credible, verifiable evidence necessary to publicly identify the subject.”
An FBI source confirmed the firing but declined to provide additional details, characterizing it as a personnel matter.
Friend, speaking to Fox News Digital, suggested that his dismissal may have been retaliatory, implicating FBI Director Kash Patel. His termination came shortly after the advocacy group Empower Oversight Whistleblowers & Research ended its representation of him on Dec. 5, warning that his public commentary “risk[ed] further adverse administrative action” by the bureau.
