Minimum of sixteen people die in Sydney shooting


(MENAFN) At least 16 people were killed and 40 others hospitalized following a shooting at Bondi Beach in Sydney, New South Wales, authorities reported on Sunday.

“More information will be made available soon,” police said in a statement on social media.

NSW Police Commissioner Mal Lanyon characterized the incident as “a terrorist incident,” while the state’s Premier, Chris Minns, said the attack appeared “designed to target the Jewish community.”

Police indicated that one of the suspected shooters is among the deceased, while a second alleged attacker remains in critical condition. Among those injured are two police officers.

Authorities reported that “a number of suspicious items located in the vicinity are being examined by specialist officers, and an exclusion zone is in place.”

An extensive crime scene has been established, with investigations ongoing. Officials emphasized that “there have been NO reports of any other incidents in Sydney connected to this incident.”
