Syria, US say ISIS attack aimed to undermining emerging bilateral ties
(MENAFN) Syria and the United States on Sunday emphasized their commitment to cooperation in counterterrorism following a deadly ISIS (Daesh) attack near Palmyra, describing the assault as an attempt to disrupt emerging bilateral relations.
The statements came during a phone conversation between Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaibani and US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, according to Syrian foreign ministry sources. Both officials agreed that the "cowardly act" was intended to undermine the growing relationship between the two countries.
Shaibani characterized the attack as a renewed challenge in the fight against terrorism and highlighted the need for close collaboration with international partners, particularly the United States, to strengthen joint counterterrorism measures. He also conveyed condolences from President Ahmad al-Sharaa to US President Donald Trump and expressed gratitude for Washington’s support for Syria.
Rubio reaffirmed continued US backing for the Syrian government, including coordination on counterterrorism, efforts to enhance stability, and initiatives to foster economic recovery, as noted in the Syrian statement. The US confirmed the call, adding that Shaibani reiterated Damascus’ commitment "to degrade and destroy the shared threat of ISIS."
A US spokesperson stressed that "The United States will hold all who hurt and threaten Americans accountable," while Trump vowed to deliver “big damage” to those responsible.
The deadly ambush on US personnel occurred Saturday in the Palmyra desert, killing two American troops and a civilian, and injuring three additional service members, according to US Central Command (CENTCOM). Syrian authorities responded Sunday with operations targeting ISIS cells in the Homs countryside.
US forces are stationed in Syria as part of the international coalition against ISIS, established in 2014, with Syria formally joining the coalition on Nov. 12. Since the ouster of Bashar al-Assad’s former regime in December 2024, the new Syrian administration has focused on restoring security and stabilizing conditions throughout the country.
