Over Dozen Dead as Floods Batter Morocco

(MENAFN) Intense rainfall and flash flooding have claimed at least 14 lives and left 32 others injured in Morocco's Atlantic coastal Province of Safi, local authorities announced in a statement Sunday.

The catastrophic floods resulted from severe thunderstorms that battered the province over approximately one hour, submerging dozens of residential properties and commercial establishments, the statement detailed.

An earlier dispatch from a state news agency reported that roughly 70 homes and businesses in the city of Safi were inundated, while 10 vehicles were carried away by powerful floodwaters. The deluge also inflicted significant damage on roadways, triggering extensive traffic disruptions across the area, the news agency reported.

Officials indicated that search and rescue operations remain ongoing to locate missing individuals, while crews work to restore road infrastructure and essential public services throughout the province.

The disaster highlights the region's vulnerability to extreme weather patterns, with emergency responders racing against time to reach affected communities and provide critical aid to survivors.
