US, Ukraine hold Berlin talks on twenty-point peace plan, economy

(MENAFN) Delegations from the United States and Ukraine met in Berlin on Sunday for lengthy negotiations focused on a proposed 20-point peace initiative and a range of economic matters, according to an official summary of the discussions.

The talks brought together Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, US special envoy Steve Witkoff, Jared Kushner, and senior representatives from both governments. The session stretched beyond five hours, as outlined in a meeting recap shared by Witkoff on social media.

According to the statement, participants engaged in "in-depth" exchanges covering the peace proposal, economic priorities "and more." The update noted that "A lot of progress was made, and they will meet again tomorrow morning."

Germany hosted the discussions ahead of a larger gathering scheduled for Monday evening that is expected to include Zelenskyy, European leaders, and representatives from the European Union and NATO. It has not been confirmed whether US officials will attend that broader summit.

Zelenskyy arrived in Berlin earlier Sunday as part of intensified diplomatic efforts aimed at exploring a possible ceasefire and a broader peace arrangement with Russia. Prior to the meeting, he said Ukraine is seeking direct security assurances from Washington, along with guarantees from European partners and other nations such as Canada and Japan.

The Berlin talks represent the most recent round in an ongoing diplomatic process centered on ending the Russia-Ukraine war. Previous discussions were held in Switzerland and the United States.

In November, officials convened in Geneva, where they produced a “refined peace framework,” revising an earlier 28-point proposal developed by the United States. Following that session, Witkoff and Kushner traveled to Moscow on Dec. 2 for discussions with Russian President Vladimir Putin regarding the updated framework.

Subsequent follow-up meetings took place in Florida, with both sides later describing those talks as constructive and forward-looking.
