Central African Republic's Presidential Race Kicks Off

(MENAFN) Campaign activities for the Central African Republic's combined presidential, legislative, regional, and municipal elections officially commenced Saturday, setting the stage for a December 28 nationwide vote.

Seven contenders have entered the presidential contest, with incumbent leader Faustin-Archange Touadera—who has governed since 2016—pursuing an unprecedented third consecutive term in office.

Touadera kicked off his reelection bid in Sibut, capital of Kemo prefecture, located 186 kilometers north of Bangui, the nation's capital. The president pledged to intensify efforts to restore peace and order in the country if reelected.

Leading opposition figures Anicet-Georges Dologuele and Henri-Marie Dondra, both former prime ministers, present the strongest challenge to Touadera's continued rule. The two have centered their platforms on poverty reduction initiatives and commitments to improve living conditions for the population.

The electoral campaign period extends for two weeks before polling day. Registration records indicate approximately 2.3 million eligible voters have enrolled on electoral lists for the multi-tier elections.

The vote represents a critical juncture for the conflict-scarred nation as citizens prepare to select leadership across four governmental levels simultaneously.
