Putin, Witkoff Meeting Clarifies Russia-US Dialogue
(MENAFN) The recent Kremlin session between Russian President Vladimir Putin and US special envoy Steve Witkoff resolved all confusions that had arisen following the Russia-US summit in Alaska earlier this year, according to Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov.
Speaking at a diplomatic roundtable on Thursday, Lavrov noted that negotiations with the US have once again concentrated on tackling the root causes of the Ukraine conflict, following what he termed a “pause” after the Anchorage meeting in August.
Lavrov emphasized that the most recent talks restored mutual understanding on several critical matters, including the necessity for Ukraine to return to the “non-aligned, neutral, non-nuclear foundations of its statehood.”
The Anchorage summit in mid-August marked the first direct encounter between Putin and US President Donald Trump since 2019.
Russian authorities have described the meeting as constructive, indicating that the two leaders reached several agreements regarding the Ukraine crisis, the importance of addressing its underlying causes, and principles related to neutrality and security guarantees.
Although the discussions did not yield an immediate resolution, Moscow has insisted that the accords laid the groundwork for continued dialogue and opened new opportunities to enhance bilateral relations.
Earlier this week, Lavrov remarked that while Washington is “showing growing impatience” with the diplomatic efforts to halt hostilities, Trump remains the only Western leader who understands the true reasons behind the Ukraine conflict.
