Russia Says Willing to Mediate Peace Talks in Sudan

(MENAFN) Moscow has signaled its willingness to broker peace negotiations in Sudan's devastating civil war, contingent upon a formal request from Khartoum, Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov announced Thursday.

During a Moscow embassy roundtable focused on Ukraine's diplomatic prospects, Lavrov revealed that Russia has persistently urged Sudan's Sovereign Council and opposition forces toward negotiation, though talks have yet to materialize. The nation has endured over two years of devastating internal conflict.

Lavrov emphasized the critical juncture facing the East African country, declaring Russia "is ready to facilitate" reconciliation efforts. He underscored Moscow's diplomatic leverage, stating "has such capabilities" and pledging that "if your [Sudanese] government is in favor, we will try to make use of these capabilities."

The foreign minister also confronted allegations surrounding foreign combatants in Sudan's battlefield. When questioned about purported Ukrainian mercenary involvement in alleged war crimes, Lavrov suggested Sudanese authorities could directly challenge Ukraine—either demanding an end to mercenary operations or insisting Kiev investigate and respond if denying knowledge.

Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova referenced claims in October by Colonel Fath al-Sayid of Sudanese military intelligence, who asserted that Ukrainian and Colombian mercenaries were embedded with the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF). Zakharova indicated these fighters deployed Ukrainian-manufactured drones.

The Russian Foreign Ministry has consistently advocated for diplomatic resolution in Sudan. A May statement demanded immediate cessation of combat operations and the launch of political negotiations, stressing that an "inclusive intra-Sudanese dialogue without external interference" represents the sole pathway to national stability.

Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Vershinin held discussions in June with UN Secretary-General's personal envoy for Sudan, Ramtane Lamamra, exploring mechanisms to terminate the armed confrontation.

Last September, Lavrov expressed alarm over Sudan's worsening conditions, affirming that Russia was actively exploring avenues to advance peaceful settlement.
